QUESTION: How will losing weight help my diabetes?

I have diabetes and I heard that people with diabetes shouldn’t eat any carbohydrates, sugars or starches, but I love your products.

ANSWER: You can fit any of our Nestlé products into your daily meal plan. It’s useful to understand how the body uses carbohydrates. When you eat carbohydrates, sugars or starches, your body converts them into glucose (a sugar). This glucose enters your bloodstream, and insulin helps take the glucose to your body’s cells to be used for energy or to be stored. Your body converts all carbohydrates to glucose whether the carbohydrates are from a cookie or from pasta. It is important to remember that all carbohydrates can affect your blood glucose levels, but how much they do so depends on the amount that you eat at a given time and whether they are eaten with other foods that contain protein and fat.

Checking your blood sugars will let you know how you're being affected by your intake. A registered dietitian can help you with meal planning to meet your individual needs. For a registered dietitian in your area you can call 1 800/877-1600 extension 5000 or visit www.eatright.org and click on Find a Nutrition Professional on the home page.

Do your products contain too much sugar for people with diabetes?

ANSWER: All of our products can be incorporated into a healthy meal plan for a person with diabetes. If you are following a calorie-controlled diet as prescribed by your physician or registered dietitian or are just looking to start eating healthfully, any of our meals will meet your needs.

Did you know that it is not simply what you eat that increases your blood sugar levels? Rather, the amount of food you consume at a given time also plays a big role. For example, even if you eat sugar free or dietetic foods, there are still calories and other nutrients that may impact your blood and insulin levels as well as your weight if you are not watching portion sizes.

People with diabetes can and do eat sugar. When you eat carbohydrates your body breaks them down or converts them into glucose. This glucose enters your bloodstream and insulin helps to take the glucose to your body's cells to be used for energy or to be stored. In diabetes, the way insulin works may not be normal, so it is important to control the amount of sugar that is consumed. Your body converts all carbohydrates to glucose whether the carbs are from a cookie or from pasta.

It is important to remember that all carbohydrates can affect your blood glucose levels, but the degree of the impact depends on the amount that you eat at a given time and whether the carbs are eaten with other foods that contain protein and fat.

How will losing weight help my diabetes?

ANSWER: A reduction of just 5 to 10 percent of excess bodyweight may be enough to improve blood glucose, blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol level. If a person is at risk for developing type 2 diabetes, losing as little as 10 to 15 pounds and exercising for just 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week can delay or prevent the onset of diabetes by almost 60% (source: American Diabetes Association).
