Hello, My Sweet

Halloween, Valentine’s Day—all the upcoming holidays can be a minefield for chocolate lovers with diabetes. Take solace, however, because chocolate may have some health benefits. Research suggests that some dark chocolate consumption may be associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular disease.

Remember that moderation is key, and not all chocolate is equal. Unfortunately, white chocolate doesn’t hold the same heart benefits—it does not contain flavonoids—so stick to the dark varieties. In fact, the darker the chocolate, generally, the higher the antioxidant content. Check the Nutrition Facts label, and adjust your meal plan and insulin or medication accordingly. Go for the good stuff and really savor that piece—to your heart!
