Holiday Survival Guide

Along with all the joys of the season - family get togethers, gifts exchanges, and holiday parties- come temptations and potential risks for individuals living with diabetes. Often, the festivities meant to excite and enchant us become exhausting—physically and mentally. Tempting holiday treats combined with stressful schedules can lead to impulse eating and battered blood glucose levels. Unfortunately, the damage done to your body can last long after the season is over.

The good news? You don't have to wait until next year to resolve to have a happier and healthier holiday season. You can still achieve balance this season by simply planning ahead.

When it comes to tempting foods, consult with your physician before the holidays arrive. You may be able to enjoy some extra holiday goodies if you can adapt your fitness routine, eat less of other treats, or plan your insulin levels accordingly. Your physician or dietitian may also be able to suggest some nutritious recipe/ingredient substitutions to make your family's favorites easier to enjoy.

Here are some other easy remedies for maintaining your nutrition plan (and your sanity) this holiday season:

  • Maintain Your Blood Glucose Routine. Monitor more often if you’re eating frequently or at irregular times.

  • Stay Active.  Don’t lax in your fitness routine—it can help control your blood sugar, relieve excess stress and burn extra calories.

  • Hide from the Hassle. Be sure to take rejuvenation time for yourself before, during and after this hectic time of year. Carving time out for yourself can prevent excess stress and allow you to truly savor the season.

  • Keep It Simple.  Have your presents gift-wrapped where you purchase them this year, prepare easy recipes or move celebrations to a less hectic time of year.

  • Rest. Repeat. Get plenty of rest each night so you are mentally and physically prepared to handle all the hustle and bustle.

The holidays are meant to be a special time shared with friends and family. By planning a little and relaxing a lot more, there is no reason your holidays can't be a treat this year. Focus on maintaining a daily balance to truly enjoy all the season has to offer.
