By the Numbers
Is Anyone Out There? You Bet! Connecting with your peers

Does having Type 2 diabetes ever make you feel like you’re a member of an ultra-exclusive club? If so, remember that other people—in fact, many others—walk in the same shoes you do. According to the National Institutes of Health, 19-20 million people in this country alone are managing Type 2 diabetes. That’s a big number. How big is big, though?

Put it this way: the largest football stadium in the United States is Michigan Stadium, found on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor. This massive stadium can hold nearly 108,000 fired-up Wolverine fans. Yet you would have to fill “The Big House” 186 times in order to equal the number of people with Type 2 diabetes in the United States!

So, now that you know there are literally millions more fish swimming in the same sea as you, make plans to hook up with the ones living in your area! Connecting with other people with whom you can relate to will provide you with sources of support, camaraderie and motivation. Ask your doctor for a list of groups in your community, or call your local American Diabetes Association office at 888-DIABETES.
