Safety in the Summer Heat

Spending time outdoors in the summer is actually good for you and a lot of fun. Just keep in mind that when the mercury starts to rise a little too high, a few extra precautions will help you stay comfortable in the heat.

Dehydration

One concern for anyone in hot temperatures is the possibility of dehydration. To eliminate that risk, follow these easy tips.

• To replace fluids lost throughout the day, continuously drink plenty of water and other liquids—even if you’re not thirsty.

• Limit your caffeine and alcohol intake, both of which can cause you to lose more water.

• Watch for other symptoms of dehydration like dry mouth and a decrease in sweat and urine.

• Some medications can increase your risk of dehydration, so be sure to stay in tune with your body’s clues.

Dehydration can also be caused by elevated blood glucose, and heat can cause your blood glucose to fluctuate. Check your blood glucose levels at least four times a day, and even more frequently if you’re having difficulty controlling your levels. Wherever you go, be sure to have water and snacks on hand to keep your blood glucose readings in check.

Staying comfortable

Another way strategy for those hot days is to just avoid the hottest part of the day. If you garden or exercise outdoors, do so early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures have cooled. You may also want to consider moving your exercise regimen indoors in air-conditioned spaces.

On really hot days, if you don’t have air-conditioning at home, choose activities that are found in air-conditioned places—visit your neighbors or go to the movies or library.

Clothing can also play a role in how you handle heat. When you do go outdoors, wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the sun. And be sure your blood glucose testing supplies and insulin stay in a cool, dry place, away from extreme temperatures.

Most importantly, summer is a time to have fun and spend more time outdoors, enjoying the nice weather. And when the weather gets a bit extreme, remember these simple precautions and enjoy!
